Apart from the first 2 kilometres along the main road (N1) from Beaufort West, the rest of the way is a gravel road, normally in good condition and suitable for small family cars. Large cars with very low clearance may need to travel more slowly.

The trip usually takes just under an hour, except after heavy rains (rare in this part of the world) when extra care is needed.
Beaufort West is a large country centre, located on the national highway between Johannesburg and Cape Town. It is a convenient place to fill up on fuel before heading out to Hillandale, and purchase groceries and other supplies if you plan a self-catering holiday. There are also rental cars available for travellers who arrive by train or bus and wish to drive out to Hillandale.
